How Long Does a Roadworthy Certificate Last in Queensland?

Quick one today after inspecting this Haval in Cleveland. The owner asked how long the certificate stays valid – it’s one of the most common questions I get.
Private sellers - 2 months or 2,000km
If you’re a private seller, your roadworthy certificate (safety certificate) is valid for 2 months or 2,000 kilometres from the date it was issued – whichever comes first.
That gives you plenty of time to sell your car. Most well-priced cars with a roadworthy ready sell well within that window.
Licensed dealers - 3 months or 1,000km
If you’re a licensed motor dealer, the certificate is valid for 3 months or 1,000 kilometres – whichever comes first. Note the kilometre limit is actually lower for dealers than for private sellers.
Get your roadworthy before you list - not after
The biggest mistake I see is people listing their car for sale without a roadworthy and hoping to sort it out later. This almost always backfires.
Buyers see a listing without a roadworthy and immediately lose trust. They assume something is wrong with the car. The ad sits there, the price drops, and it keeps dropping. Eventually someone shows up and offers a rock-bottom price because they know the seller is desperate. The buyer promises to get the roadworthy himself. The seller agrees because he just wants the car gone.
Then the problems start. The car is still in the seller’s name because there’s no roadworthy to complete the transfer. Toll charges, speeding fines, and other tickets start arriving at the seller’s address. The buyer doesn’t get the roadworthy done because he’s short on money. When the car finally gets inspected, it fails for a long list of issues – some of which weren’t there when the seller handed it over. The seller has no proof of the car’s condition because he never got an inspection done.
And here’s the worst part – selling a registered vehicle without providing a roadworthy certificate is illegal in Queensland. The seller has broken the law and has very little legal standing to fix the mess.
All of this is avoided by getting the roadworthy done first. A car with a valid certificate sells faster, sells for more, and the transfer can be completed immediately. You can mention in your ad that the roadworthy is ready – serious buyers love this because it means the car is good to go today.
Two months is plenty of time. Get the roadworthy, list the car, sell it, done.
What if the certificate expires before you sell?
If you haven’t sold the car within 2 months or 2,000km, the certificate expires and you’ll need a new full inspection. Your registration isn’t affected – you just need a fresh certificate before you can complete a sale.
