Unregistered Motorcycle? How to Get It Roadworthy and Registered in QLD

I inspected this Honda CBR500 in Greenslopes today. The owner had bought it unregistered from interstate and needed a roadworthy to get it registered in Queensland. He asked me beforehand whether the bike needed to be insured or registered before I could inspect it.

No. It doesn’t.

The bike does not need to be insured or registered for the inspection

This is one of the most common questions I get. You do not need registration or insurance to get a roadworthy inspection. The inspection happens before registration – that’s the whole point. You get the roadworthy first, then you take the certificate to TMR to register the vehicle.

I carry my own business insurance that explicitly covers test rides on unregistered and uninsured vehicles during the inspection process. That’s my responsibility, not yours.

This is exactly why mobile works for unregistered bikes

If your motorcycle is unregistered, you can’t legally ride it on the road. That means you can’t ride it to a workshop for an inspection. Your options would be loading it into a ute, onto a trailer, or paying for a tow truck. That’s expensive and inconvenient before you’ve even started.

With a mobile inspection, the bike stays wherever it is. Your garage, your shed, your driveway, your carport. I come to you, inspect it on the spot, and if it passes, the certificate goes to your email. The bike doesn’t move until it’s registered and legal to ride.

Step by step - unregistered motorcycle to registered and legal

Here’s the full process from unregistered bike to riding legally:

1. Book a mobile roadworthy. Book online, I come to wherever the bike is parked. The inspection takes about 15-20 minutes for motorcycles.

2. Get the certificate. If the bike passes, the electronic safety certificate goes to your email on the spot. If it fails, you get a detailed report of what needs fixing. Get the repairs done and book a re-inspection.

3. Go to a TMR customer service centre. Bring the safety certificate on your phone, proof of ownership (receipt, bill of sale), and your driver’s licence. If the bike was previously registered interstate, bring the old plates to hand in.

4. Pay for registration and CTP. TMR will process the registration, issue you Queensland number plates, and set up your CTP insurance. You walk out with plates in your hand.

5. Fit the plates and ride. You have 24 hours to fit the plates. After that, you’re registered, insured, and legal to ride.

What if the bike fails?

If the motorcycle fails the inspection, you’ll receive a report listing exactly what needs to be repaired. Common fail points on unregistered motorcycles include:

Flat or cracked tyres from sitting unused. Tyres deteriorate from age even if they look ok.

Seized brakes from months or years without use.

Dead battery that won’t hold charge.

Leaking fork seals – the number one motorcycle fail point regardless of registration status.

Corroded chain from sitting without lubrication.

Non-working lights from corroded wiring or blown globes.

Get the repairs done by any mechanic you choose, then book a re-inspection within 14 days. You only pay the call-out fee for the re-inspection.

Bought a bike from Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace?

A lot of unregistered motorcycles are sold privately through Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace. If you’ve bought one, the roadworthy is your first step to getting it on the road legally.

Before you book, make sure you have proof of ownership – a receipt, a bill of sale, something that shows you bought the bike legitimately. TMR will ask for this when you register it. Also make sure the bike has a compliance plate – without one, it can’t be registered through the standard process.

Got an unregistered motorcycle? I come to you. No rego or insurance needed for the inspection. South Brisbane, Redlands, Logan and surrounding areas. From $110
