COI Inspection in Brisbane - What It Is and How to Book

I get asked about COI inspections regularly. “Do I need a COI or a roadworthy?” “Where can I get a COI in Brisbane?” “What’s the difference?” Here’s everything you need to know.

Light vehicles only

Before you read any further – I only do COI inspections for light vehicles up to 4,500kg GVM. This includes cars, vans, utes, SUVs, and minibuses.

I do not do COI inspections for heavy vehicles. No trucks, no heavy rigid or medium rigid vehicles. If you need a heavy vehicle COI, you need a heavy vehicle inspection station – that’s not me.

What is a COI?

COI stands for Certificate of Inspection. It’s an inspection of a vehicle’s safety condition. The actual inspection process is identical to a standard roadworthy (safety certificate). Same items get checked – tyres, brakes, suspension, steering, lights, windscreen, mirrors, seat belts, underbody, warning lights, horn, wipers, and a test drive with a recorded brake test. Same checklist, same standards, same process.

The only difference is the type of certificate issued at the end.

When do you need a COI?

The vast majority of light vehicle COI inspections are for rideshare drivers. If you drive for Uber, DiDi, Ola, or any other rideshare platform, you likely need a COI as part of your vehicle approval process.

The other common reason is commercial passenger transport. If your business involves transporting people – aged care providers using minibuses, hotel or nightclub shuttle drivers, clinics transporting patients, or any company vehicle used to carry passengers commercially – a COI may be required.

If you’re selling a car, transferring ownership, or registering a vehicle, you need a standard safety certificate (roadworthy), not a COI.

Not sure which one you need? Just book a roadworthy. If it turns out you need a COI instead, mention it in the notes and I’ll issue the right certificate.

How to book a COI - step by step

Go to my online booking system. Choose “Roadworthy Inspection” – either flexible ($110) or priority ($140). In the booking notes, write “COI” or “Certificate of Inspection.” That’s it.

There is no separate COI booking option. A COI is the same inspection at the same price as a roadworthy. I kept the booking system simple so you can book in under a minute without having to figure out which service to choose.

Same price as a roadworthy:

Book online – $110 (I arrive between 8am and 4.30pm) or $140 (you choose a 2-hour time window).

Book over the phone – $120 or $150.

Mobile COI inspection

Just like a roadworthy, I come to you. Your home, your workplace, wherever the vehicle is parked. The inspection takes about 20-30 minutes. If the vehicle passes, the certificate is issued electronically on the spot.

No need to drive to a workshop. No need to take time off work. Book online, mention COI in the notes, and I handle the rest.

COI vs roadworthy - quick summary
