What Is a Safety Certificate in Queensland?

I did an unattended inspection on this Ford Ranger in Springwood today. The owner booked online, left the key in a secure spot, and went to work. I inspected the car, it passed, and he received the electronic safety certificate by email while sitting at his desk. He texted back “what’s a safety certificate? I thought I was getting a roadworthy?”

Same thing. Different name.

Safety certificate and roadworthy certificate - same thing

In Queensland, the official name is safety certificate. That’s the term Transport and Main Roads (TMR) uses. But almost everyone calls it a roadworthy certificate or just a roadworthy. They are exactly the same document, the same inspection, and the same legal requirement.

When you hear roadworthy, safety certificate, RWC, or roadworthy certificate – it’s all the same thing. The electronic certificate you receive after a passed inspection is officially called a safety certificate and that’s what TMR recognises.

So if you’ve been searching for “safety certificate” and landing on pages about roadworthys, you’re in the right place.

When do you need one?

You need a safety certificate in Queensland when:

Selling a registered vehicle – the seller must provide one to the buyer before ownership can be transferred.

Transferring ownership – gifting a car to a family member, changing names on the registration, any change of registered operator.

Registering an unregistered vehicle – if the registration has lapsed for more than 3 months or the vehicle has never been registered in QLD.

Transferring interstate registration to Queensland – any vehicle coming from another state needs a QLD safety certificate.

You do not need one for annual registration renewal, for routine driving, or for any other purpose.

What gets checked?

A safety certificate inspection covers all safety-critical components of the vehicle. This includes tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, lights, windscreen, mirrors, seat belts, dashboard warning lights, oil leaks, horn, wipers, door handles, and more. A test drive and brake test are also part of the inspection.

It’s a safety-only inspection. It does not cover the general mechanical condition of the vehicle, the engine health, the transmission, or how long the car will last. It confirms the vehicle meets minimum safety standards for use on Queensland roads.

For a full list of what gets checked, see the dedicated pages for cars, motorcycles, and trailers on my website.

How to get one - the easy way

The easiest way is a mobile inspection. You book online, I come to your home or work, inspect the vehicle, and if it passes, the electronic safety certificate is emailed to you on the spot. The certificate comes directly from TMR via a .gov.au email address and is immediately registered in their system. You can use it for an online registration transfer straight away.

You don’t even need to be there. This Ford Ranger in Springwood was an unattended inspection. The owner left the key, I did the inspection, and he had his certificate by email before lunch. He didn’t have to take time off work, didn’t have to sit in a waiting room, and didn’t have to drive the car anywhere.

Unattended inspections are popular with people who work during the day but need the roadworthy done. Book the flexible option for $110 online, choose unattended, leave the key in an agreed spot, and I handle the rest.

What does the certificate look like?

The safety certificate is electronic. You receive it by email as a PDF. It shows the vehicle details, the certificate number (starting with LV- for cars, MC- for motorcycles, or LT- for trailers), the date of issue, and the inspector’s details.

You don’t need to print it. The certificate is registered electronically with TMR and can be verified online. When doing a registration transfer, the system already knows the certificate exists.

The certificate is valid for 2 months or 2,000 kilometres from the date of issue, whichever comes first. For licensed dealers, it’s 3 months or 1,000 kilometres.

Need a safety certificate? I come to you in Springwood, Logan, Redlands and South Brisbane. From $110. Unattended inspections available.
